A New Exercise Program Specific For Hip And Knee Arthritis.
What is the GLA:D Program?
Based on Good life with Osteoarthritis in Denmark (GLA:D®), The GLA:D Canada program is a nationwide evidence-based initiative that follows the current recommendation for the treatment of hip and knee osteoarthritis.
It is an 8-week exercise and education program for individuals with knee and /or hip osteoarthritis. This program is unique in that the education and exercises provided can be applied to everyday activities. By strengthening and correcting daily movement patterns, participants train their bodies to move with improved control and alignment, prevent symptom progression, and reduce pain. Research from GLA:D® in Denmark show participants being more physically active, reporting less pain, reduced use of pain medications and may delay or prevent the need for surgery.

What else can happen?
Without the intervention of exercise and education patients with arthritis are at risk of a downward spiral known as the 3M effect:
- Mechanical issues with more joint problems caused by weakness and poor alignment.
- Metabolic conditions like type2 Diabetes are caused by weight gain and inactivity
- Motivation to move is reduced by pain or disability and depression can be a consequence.

“For the past year and a half I have been unable to walk more than 5 or 6 minutes at a time without having to quit due to knee pain. Walking is my stress reliever and main form of aerobic exercise and having lost that part of my life has been very disheartening. After 5 weeks in the GLA:D Program, yesterday I was able to walk 22 minutes without stopping and without any knee pain. When my husband asked me about my walk, I burst into tears – but they were happy tears! I can’t thank Christine and Physio Plus enough for the opportunity to participate in this program and to meet such a wonderful and inspiring group of women.”
“I saw improvement in my strength & balance and a lessening of pain in knee and hip. It gave me hope! And the incentive to keep working at exercising to preserve and strengthen knee & hip mobility even more.”
“I learned exercises I can do to strengthen & support my joints. Also, I felt the group aspect of the class encouraged me & supported my efforts. I was pleased that I was able to do some of the activities with less knee pain. Christine is so encouraging and helpful in suggesting ways to modify exercises.”
“I saw great improvement in strength & flexibility and general fitness. Excellent program, great instruction from Christine. She is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.”
